Month 9, Day 17: A Global Problem and PM is hiding

Dying with Dignity is indeed a Global movement. We are a part of a world on this that is striving for change. Today World Federation of Dying With Dignity further supported my/our crusade to get the law changed to the benefit of the terminally ill. Furious Tony Abbott will not engage around conscience voting. I need to get political, help me!

It is no surprise but with less than 20 days left on crowdfunding I do have to push in a few blogs the huge need to activate those wallets and help ensure my documentary gets made. I hope to live to die under the law but doubt it. The documentary is my plan B and as you would understand is a huge private thing to set my family up for, BUT we are all in and well on the way.

The world is supporting us as you see in the link below. Surely it is not to much to hope for more than 460 people to chip in a few bucks. The world has a few billion people, please be one. Check out the link and thanks in anticipation.

On normal stuff had a great day, caught up with a good friend who came to coffee with a Penfolds Bin 389! Talked to a business friend in Singapore which should become a great dinner, studied some legal stuff, a brief for an Affidavit I am going to do in a manner that it will be admissible in a case post my death, did an interview with a great budding freelance journo. Also had a visit from my Pallitave care team who I love, and from my Oxygen bottle supplier, great chats and ideas and a quick zoom to the hospital for bloods as Chemo again on Monday. Great vampire, did not feel a thing. Cuddled my dog and family. Off to the beach with friends for the weekend. Who says choice and control over ones future does not make for a fantastic today! Another day.

Dr Rodney Syme the man who started me on this and has shown me he will ensure I have the knowledge and means around choice, also got back to Australia after a month overseas. Great comfort, can’t wait to catch up.

Surprise me with the fundraising by Sunday night, it will be a great documentary.

Month 9, Day 16: Senate Hearing clips and how it felt

Yesterday was a long day, but it really paid off with reports on ABC News and Seven News last night and other newspaper websites. This is big to get Dying with Dignity into the mainstream media TV. It has been a while.

I sat through most of the day listening to other for and against witnesses and really could see no stong rational not to progress this legislation. Senator Singh (L) and Senator Di Natale  (G) were very impressive in their knowledge and ?. The rest of the panel also very astute. Often gross non factual generalisations which had been submitted to this hearing and very old studies and incorrect facts were clearly shown for what they were, myopic barrow pushing. Dying with Dignity Victoria also put the most incisive facts and rationale and what I would see as knockout blow, to the slippery slope debate. It was music for the ears!

Please click here to watch the Seven News report.

Below are a couple of newspaper articles from the Herald Sun and which have covered yesterday’s hearing.

Interesting development in Brittany Maynard story. She and her version of Dying with Dignity are trying to raise $500,000 to fund expanding Dying with Dignity laws to greater than the current 5 states in the United States. Where it is amazing is an angle supporter has come in and said they will donate $1 for every $1 raised effectively doubling the outcome.

Crowdfunding for my documentary to change the law for all Australians is going well at nearly 400 funders and 52K but I really need help to tap into the bulk of my friends, associates and supporters who just haven’t got to it. If this is you please follow the documentary/donate tab at top of blog. Pushy aren’t I, must be something to do with importance of  the goal and only 19 days to hit it.

Month 9, Day 13: The Senate Hearing on Wednesday

Today I am working on polishing my intro for the Senate hearing on Wed 15th in Melbourne. It is public so if interested the details are below. Not sure how big the room is. I am very excited as the only solo person or as they call it witness to be called. Let me assure you I am going into this in the belief I am representing the thoughts, hopes and wishes of my 21,000 petition signers, my Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn supporters, The Dying with Dignity and associated groups, the politicians who have represented to me they support Dying with Dignity and of course the 82% of Australians who want this draft bill turned into national legislation. I also feel I owe it to both Senator Richard Di Natale and Dr Rodney Syme who have given me the power of understanding such an inspirational pallitave tool, namely CHOICE about medically assisted Death when terminally ill.

Please click here to read the formal letter of invitation to the Public Hearing which is taking place on Wednesday regarding the exposure draft of the Medical Services (Dying with Dignity) Bill and click here to read the program for the hearing.

Crowdfunding has 21 days left and we are getting close to $50,000, so $50,000 to go. Thanks so much to the 385 funders so far, and feel free to join in now if you are considering it.

We still have 4 drive of a lifetime packages available in perks so be quick and get one for Christmas. All funds from them go straight to the documentary. Click here to find out more information

If you miss tonights 2GB interview with Steve Price after 8pm don’t worry I will put it on the blog tomorrow.

Month 9, Day 12: The Weekend Australian Magazine Cover

Interesting article where I make a few points I think matter. Have a read if interested in broadening the views around Dying with Dignity. I think the cover is interesting shame I can’t choose my title, I like stirrer. Please click here to read the Weekend Australian article.

Big day for rev heads, Bathurst 1000. Have been to many and love the suspense that always builds, pace cars, weather, mechanical issues, driver problems, kangaroos and the ever present rule book. This one is a real survivor episode.

House feels a little different without Speckle, and Elizabeth is hobbling well on her one leg, till she can put both feet on the ground Thursday after post op stitch removal. We are also having some friends over for an early BBQ as it is our 29th Wedding anniversary!

Big week coming up stay tuned…

Month 9, Day 10: Medically assisted death for our Cat and a personal video plea

Hi, sad day but we have decided our much loved old cat has run out of steam. Last 6 mths of pain killers and steroids have gone as far as they should. She looked up at Elizabeth this morning with a mouth full of fur she had just plucked out and a pained paw and her eyes confirmed what we thought. Off to the vet at 6pm, and she loves going there so no trauma, for her.

Please play the video and act, still need help. I mention in it, the voice is not cancer but it is! Rats. Essentially my lymph nodes pressed into my left voice box and collapsed it. The solution was go in and fill it back out again with something called vox, push back on the lymph node so to speak. Anyway voice is back though a bit strained and no idea how long but all good for now. Enjoy the video and I will put up Steve Price interview. It went really well and is played probably to be played Monday night.

Hope you liked it and spring to action!

Month 9, Day 9: Can I talk?

Hi real quick one for a change. Operation was a success. I now have a reasonable voice if I don’t push it. Did not get a French accent. Talk about instant results. How long or how strong will be just one of those mysteries we will find out about. Special thanks to Grace my nurse, look up the U2 song of the same name it is a beauty.

I get a chance to give it a fly as Steve Price rang to ask if I would talk on radio about my view on Brittany Maynard. Will prerecord in 15 min and may play on radio tonight. Wow what a lady and story.

She is doing in the US what I am working on here. Hers is an amazing perspective, have a look. Please click here to read her story.

Month 9, Day 8: Bugger, off to Hospital

Well I have just the best medical team. This arvo off to standing oncologist Des, my main man is holidaying, to enquire where my voice went. 4pm. View was it is cancer related issue things pushing on vocal chords. Mitch guessed that right, I was the ongoing cold theory. I say but I am supposed to speak at the Senate Hearing next week on Dying with Dignity! They ring ENT guy. 5.30pm at ENT guy a few suburbs away and he looks and sprays and pokes a thing like a small elephant trunk down my nose into my throat. Verdict yep oncologist was right. Solution small operation, poly filler in vocal chords and they will sort of work again. How about see you at the hospital 9am tomorrow, stay the day and all goes well home for dinner talking again. I signed up so that is my day, interesting a new voice from here on, I am going to ask for a slight french accent so I sound like Sophie. You never want to get cancer but gosh if you do you need to go the journey with my guys it is almost fun, unbelievable customer service.

Eliz home today from her op yesterday. Foot all bandaged but surgeon found nerves wrapped in scar tissue in her foot and is very confident, great news though I was supposed to be the carer. Will be tonight anyway.

Funniest part is day started with me going to pick up my special car from the special car place as it was reading a fault that was to be fixed. They brought it out and fault showed up again so they gave me a brand new Macan Sport. Suppose that will sit in the drive till they sort the electronic glitch the Black Banana 2 seems to have developed. It was fun racing it between doctor places.

Month 9, Day 7: Elizabeth is in Hospital!

Thankfully not a drama but planned. She has a strange foot tendon thing called plantafasiartis and it means ongoing foot pain. Final straw is an operation done this morning. So far so good, overnight in Glenferrie Private Hospital which is right next to the Hawthorn Football Club so maybe a bit of winning magic will cross the road to the healing tendons. Then it is a week on crutches and a month or so building back up. Mitch and I are all set to treat her a bit more specially.

It does make one reflect on aloneness. I am here tonight by myself and Mitch is at work. I really hate been alone at home for extended periods, I measure it in hours. I would normally go out but with the breathing a bit harder at night I am TV bound. What I find really difficult to understand is people who get sick and live alone, just not sure how they do it. They obviously do but my wishes are with them.

Still pushing the doco and of course the best way into supporting that in substance is picking up a Ferrari Prancing horse drive day in the perks. Believe me it is something very special for 2. Please click here for more details.

Crowdfunding for documentary is currently at $41,000 with $59,000 to go to reach the target, 27 days left and 316 funders.

Off to see the Doctor tomorrow as I am now 2.5 weeks with no voice. Can’t even talk on the phone!

Month 9, Day 6: Sam Chan becomes a Documentary Fundraiser

Interesting development that Mitchell’s friend Sam Chan has come up with. While I have been using all avenues available for crowdfunding $100K, so far having reached just over $40K with 1 month to go, I had not thought about the power of others joining me to raise funds for my cause. Out of the blue Sam decided he would abstain alcohol for October as part of the Ocsober challenge, seek sponsorship and do it on my behalf.

Have a look at the site that Sam has established for the cause.

Thanks a million Sam!

PS: If anyone else would like to follow his lead in some venture or other I am happy to assist in anyway I can, just let me know.
